Yes, pure speculation on both our parts.
For both George and Keith, I just go by what I hear. I hear Keith's lead and rhythm guitar playing and George doesn't even come close to him. George is a much better slide player than Keith. The problem with George is he had a similar problem that The Edge has - his playing sounds the same on many records - not as bad as the Edge, but still enough to where that same sound repeats too much. Now George played several more instruments than Keith, too; where as Keith never learned how to play any of the Indian instruments, yet had George not been in the Beatles, neither would had he. But the main thing here is the guitar, and Keith was light years better a guitarist.
