There is so much $$$ involved in music publishing rights that it just becomes too tempting to try and grab a bigger share of the pie. The problem is not unique to the Stones.
First, I don't buy that excuse at all! Because there is a lot of money at stake, you become corrupt and rip off your best friends and band mates to get at it? Bull, that's a terrible excuse for stealing credit from your mates!
Although it's true that it wasn't 100% unique to just the Glimmers in what they did, very few other musicians did that to their own mates, and that's a fact. Really, name five other bands where the leaders of the group stole and didn't credit their bandmates. I'll give you one off the bat - we all know Mick and Keith's idol, Chuck Berry, did that for a short while to Johnny Johnson and Willie Dixon, but how many more can you name? Page and Plant did it in Led Zep - but not to their own bandmates, they only did it to others outside of their band. Sure, their's a lot of examples of that taking place, even more so in rap music, but ripping off your own band members and claiming away their music as your own? It was almost unique to the Stones.
And even though George was allowed to get some of his songs recorded when the Beatles were together, he was still unhappy because he wanted to get more than one or two songs per album
He was lucky he was given that many songs, he had nothing to bitch about! Not that I recall him making that much of a big deal about it. But he played with two guys who made him a superstar, had he never met Paul, and had he never played with him and John, I don't think anybody ever would have heard of George Harrison.
