They didn't break any new ground, and did they really influence anyone all that much?

I disagree! They were one of the first bands to play around with what became known as country-rock, or have a southern-rock sound, and they weren't even from the south!... As far as not influencing anybody, that is far from true, too. In fact, just look at the Stones for starters. In the last few months or so of his life, Brian Jones was playing their music night and day, and it has been noted that the song "Honky Tonk Women" came about in part from the sound the Stones were hearing from CCR.
