Top 25 is a good place to start and would be interesting to see what ends up there. I have a feeling most of that list would be artist from the 50's and the 60s, with a trickle over to the 70s.
I guess my opnion of Maiden is the opposite of your's. I think their first album "Iron Maiden" is one of the greatest metal records of all time, with it's fanstic mix of metal, punk and rock. Original singer Paul Di'Anno brought a raw, punk attitude to Running Free, Prowler, Santuary, and Iron Maiden. The highlight of the album for me is Remember Tomorrow. Conversly to the greatenss of that first album, Killers suffered from a lack of well structured songs and melodies. After they ditch DiAnno, Dickness came in with his Halfordesque vocals and the melodies become even less interesting to me. I guess I like the at first album so much because it still had one leg in the rock puddle.
