RE: RE: RE:Donovan, G&R & Sex Pistols

I think i would put donovan in he wrote, sang, or played on some nice songs. He was not prolific but he was or is talented.

Donovan wasn't prolific back in the '60s? How can you say that? When I just read what 2000 Man wrote about him - claiming he should not get in because people under 40 don't know him, I first thought to myself, so he should not get in for that reason? Nobody should be denied a spot if they were great, regardless if the younger generation doesn't know them. Putting such a person in the Hall will get some of these younger people who missed out on his great music to now give his music a try. Then the next thing I thought was, hell, Donovan had hit after hit.... "Sunshine Superman", "There Is a Mountain", "Jennifer Juniper", "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Season of the Witch", "Mellow Yellow", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Lalena" and "Atlantis" - all of them alone during a short 3 year period in the late '60s. Yeah, he did fade away after '70, although he had one last hit with the Alice Cooper Group, with the song "Billion Dollar Babies", where he traded lead vocals with Alice on. Plus as Manny noted, he wrote his own music, all of his hits were self-penned. Just because some don't know an artrist doesn't mean they don't belong in the Hall. If Donovan shouldn't be in the Hall, then about 90% of those who are in there shouldn't be in either.

As far as G&R goes, you can't compare them to the Sex Pistols! In truth, the Sex Pistols only put out that one LP, as that second and last LP wasn't their album. It was a soundtrack and other bands played on it, with the Sex Pistols only appearing on a few songs without the entire band playing together on any of those songs.... Plus G&R was a excellent band with excellent musicians, whereas the Sex Pistols sucked as far as being musicians went. They didn't really know how to play their instruments well, in fact Sid Vicious fat out couldn't play at all! He didn't play on any of their songs - he only sang on a few songs. He never played a note live, either.... Sure, "God Save The Queen" was a great song, and no question they played the part of Punks great for a year or two. But they were only copying others before them, as was the case with most Punks of the '70s. Who were the first Punks of Rock? Well I'll skip the '50s (but Elvis was a punk of the '50s) and go into in the early '60s. 3 of them were John Lennon, Keith Richards and Brian Jones, doing non-music things that the Punk Rockers of the '70s would copy. Sure, all 3 of them were both hippies and punks in the '60s, no question. But it was funny that the Punks who came about in the '70s totally copied the Rockers of the '60s while putting them down at the same time and claiming they were different. They were only different in one key way - most of them could not play their instruments to save their lives!

BTW, the Sex Pistols favorite band was Alice Cooper, they used to practice by playing Cooper covers. Again, borrowing from a band that started in the '60s and who's members were also some of the first true Punks.
