On Saturday the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame will allow more in, and most of the ones getting in this year either are getting in under the wrong categories, or should not be getting in at all (all of this IMO of course). Too bad that the fans can't vote instead on who gets in. Letting people vote who are connected to record companies is the biggest problem here, and explains why, really the only reason why, many who should not be in the Hall, have gotten in the past (including some getting in this year, too). I agree with those who have stated that perhaps they should limit no more than 5 new inductees a year, that would help to put a stop to this nonsense!
So, lets take a look at who's getting in tomorrow.....
First, only one person this year makes it in under "Early Influence", and that's Freddie King. I have no problem with King getting in. Then I also have no problems with the 5 getting in under "Sidemen": Don Kirshner, Cosimo Matassa, Tom Dowd, and a guy us Stones and Beatles fans know well, Glyn Johns.
Okay, the most important section of the Hall, for the "Performers":
Guns N' Roses - I was never a big fan of theirs, but they were still a very good band who was putting out good music during a time when there were few good bands and not too much good music coming out. They also helped to keep Hard Rock going in the '90s. So yes, they should be in the Hall.
But I'll note, what a true asshole Axl Rose is! Here is a chance to make up with his former bandmates, who have said they are willing to end the their hard feelings with him. But no, Axl wants to continue the BS and refuses to be a part of the show tomorrow nite. I say, never turn down a chance for making peace, and it's bad enough he's fronting a phony Guns N' Roses today. Your'e a moron Axl!
The Small Faces/Faces - Absolutely they should get in! Yes, another Stones connection for this year too, in the form of Ron Wood. But we know this band well here, so I don't need to say anymore.
Donovan - Again, absolutely he should be in! He should had gotten in years ago! If you were around in the '60s, you know he should be in the Hall.
Laura Nyro - A great songwriter, she wrote so many hits for so many others, like “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Wedding Bell Blues”, “And When I Die,” and “Eli’s Comin’”, to name some of them. Had she not died young, who knows what other hits she might had written. But, she was a bust as a performer. So yes, she should get in, but not as a performer. They should put her in for her songwriting, which falls under "Sidemen". Yes, Laura should be in the Hall.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Again, like G and R, I never was a fan of theirs, but they were okay I guess. Should they be in the Hall? I'm not 100% sure, bit I lean towards saying no, however, I can at least accept the fact they are in.
Beastie Boys - Please, you got to be fucking kidding me! One of the all time worst Rock Hall picks ever! As I have noted before here, I, unlike many Gassers, don't hate Rap, but Rap isn't really music, and even if it was, it isn't Rock music. So no rappers should ever be in the Hall for that reason alone. Now I know, this group was more Hip-hop than Rap, and yes, Hip-hop is a combo of both Rap and music. Plus yes, the music that the Beastie Boys used was more Rock music than what you hear other Hip-hop artists use perhaps, but the Beastie Boys still sucked anyway and should have no place in the Rock Hall.
The Crickets - This band played on for years after Buddy Holly died. But Buddy Holly started the band and was only in it for two years. The truth of the matter was, the band was Buddy Holly's backup group. They weren't worth a bag of beans after Holly was killed, either. So had they gotten in with Holly, I would then say okay, let 'em in. But on their own? Hell no!
The Famous Flames - They were James Brown’s backup singers. So I say the same deal as The Crickets applies here, let them in with Brown, but not as a stand alone group.
The Midnighters - A vocal group of the 1950s and early '60s. They had a ton of top 10 hits on the R&B charts, yes, but not on the Rock chart. This is the Rock Hall, correct? Still, they did help shape early Rock music (no twist without them). So if you put them in under "Early Influence", I have no problem; but they weren't Rock performers, and they shouldn't get in for that.
The Comets - Another back-up band, this time for Bill Haley. What is going on here, why are all of these back-up bands getting in this year? The Comets should not be in the Hall unless they went in with Bill Haley.
The Blue Caps - Like The Midnighters, I can see then getting in only under "Early Influence". That isn't to say they weren't good performers, they were, but most in this group made it big after they left and made it on their own.
The Miracles - If they were getting in as "Smokey Robinson and the Miracles" then yes, 100% for sure they should be in there. But, they are getting in only as "The Miracles", the Hall is not covering the years Smokey was in the group, which was the only time they had any real hits. Therefor, they shouldn't be in, unless they go in with Smokey Robinson.
So that's my take of this years inductees. What's yours?
I would like to write about our now 2 year old On Going Poll Rock Poll at my Classic Rock Site, that asks: "Of the Artists in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, who should not be in there?".
First, a note... Like all of the On Going Polls this domain runs, you can vote in them once every 9 months (that's when the cookie expires, however, if you remove your cookie to spam the vote [or any poll vote], your votes will be removed within 24 hours and you will be banned from ever voting in any of the domain's polls again). So if it's been more than 9 months, please feel free to vote again. I added in this year's inductees 2 days ago.
The top 10 picks (or losers)for this Rock Hall poll has changed in the last year, but, no change in the top 7 listed. Yes, ABBA is still the number one top pick, followed by: 2) Run-D.M.C., 3) Madonna, 4) Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, 5) Blondie, 6) Parliament-Funkadelic, 7) The Sex Pistols, 8) Metallica, 9) The Velvet Underground, and 10) U2. I should note that once we get past the top 7, there is a big drop off in votes. So the top 7 do seem to be the real picks and most unwanted in the Hall. But I got a feeling in time, that the Beastie Boys might join that list. They got, as of right now, 4 votes in just 2 days. If you look at those who got in last year, the top number of votes in the last year from that group, Darlene Love, has "only" 5 votes. I'll also note that 70.3% of the votes go to the Top 7 choices, with another 14.7% going to the next 11 spots, with the next 104 spots seeing only 15% of the vote, and that entire group of 104 - as stand alone votes go, received less than 1% of the votes each. Another 65 Rock Hall artists have no votes at all! So 4 votes in the first two days of being listed is a lot of votes for this poll. That is somewhat close to what ABBA sees each day, only a bit more.
If you would like to vote in this poll, please do so here: Rock Ongoing Poll - Hall of Fame
