Try and pull this off today, see how far you get.
It was hard enough trying to get back into the US from Canada without passports even back in '78 (or was it '79, what ever year the Stones were on Saturday Night Live), if you looked like me. The wife and I looked like two hippie freaks (well we were) and it took forever to get back in (they checked the entire car, every nook and cranny, lucky they didn't check me, as I was carrying weed). Hell, we almost didn't get to see the Stones that night because of the hold-up, got into Buffalo and our hotel room with less than a half hour to spare before the Boys came on TV!
I recall my first visit to Canada, I was around 8 or so and my entire family (6 of us, 4 kids 2 adults) went. But if you got to get passports for your kids today, I bet many US/Canada families don't bother to go anymore. I recall the second time I went with my dad, it was on a whim to see the Mets play the Expos, that kind of visit would be out for sure.
Is it that way for US citizens heading into or out of Mexico now, too? Only time I was there ('79 or '80), same deal, no passport needed, and unlike the year before while in Canada, we had no real problem getting back into the US (weird!). Maybe having a baby with us helped? Customs wasn't as wise back then while looking for drugs, that's why folks like Keith Richards used their kids to smuggle drugs while entering different countries, they placed the drugs on their kids (or in their toys). Not that I would ever had used my kids, or anybody's kids, for such a crazy thing. That's insane (or a real bad drug junkie).
