Being unable to "approach something" was (not too clearly) intended as a kind of all-encompassing statement of how some things just don't hit us right due to specific circumstances.
It can be a matter of simply finding the right material. Often times, we witness one facet of a genre continuously and dismiss the whole. For instance, people will dismiss slasher movies due to schlock like "Friday the 13th," but never see masterpieces like "Peeping Tom" or "Psycho."
Other times, it takes a while for something to sink in, as it's less accessible than stuff we're used to consuming. Many Stones fans probably have felt this way with one record or another, such as "Goat's Head Soup," "Bridges to Babylon," or "Exile on Main Street." While country, blues, and rock are clearly blood brothers, jazz occupies a strange, outsider sort of space and seems to be frequently judged with broad strokes.
Beyond that, we might have preconceptions of jazz as a super serious and elitist item of worship. Over time, I've found here the same humble skill and sense of humor rooted in our other favorite types of music.
I'm not saying anyone here falls into any of these categories, but I think it's common enough among a pretty large population to make the statement true. I also included in my post that none of these things may intrude on your experience, and you may still find jazz absolutely dull. Art is so subjective that no one should deny another person's reaction. All I'm saying is I think jazz gets a weird wrap, and I myself was inclined towards certain prejudices until I found jazz musicians I loved.
