Now, here's an example of some brilliant old school jazz from the one and only Charles Mingus:

I think the main obstacles with getting into jazz is that we either don't know how to approach it or often don't approach it on its own terms. It helps if you think of jazz as a middle ground between classical and rock (we're talking in broad strokes, of course). Sometimes, jazz is a thoughtful and introspective soundtrack to our lives, and other times, yes, it can kick some serious ass. Jazz relies on mood and specific musical elements and flourishes to comment on the content of the music. Many musicians you're already listening to are jazz enthusiasts. For the better, I think, it's about as difficult to confine jazz to a specific definition as it is for any genre of music.
As far as finding the jazz records you will take to, I'd recommend checking out some lists of great jazz records on a lazy evening, and just preview the songs in either iTunes or on Youtube.
In the end, you may still be bored by it. However, there's a lot to explore, and accessing all that content to make an informed conclusion is easier than ever.
