Great responses! I love learning what people like, even if they think it's obscure and that no-one else likes it, because it usually (eventually) leads to experimentation and appreciation for new forms of music. I can seriously get into Chopin and Bach one day and then country and bluegrass the next, although I always, ALWAYS go back to the Stones. Perhaps that is due to the fact that the Stones have such a tremendous amount of material out there and encompass so many diverse styles and sounds (i.e. genres) all by themselves.
In any case, I'm with TM in that techno and rap do nothing for me; and I'm with 2k man on the ridiculous genre-naming and pigeonholing that goes on in music, (and certainly in shoegaze) but I'll make the exception that I do believe My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" album was totally new, wholly unique, and has not been repeated by anyone, ever.
And the line "slightly punkish blues based blasting" reminds me of another fav of mine that I wonder if anyone else got into at one time: Spacemen 3...heavy...blues... drone...and the band motto unequaled in music (ha ha!): "taking drugs to make music to take drugs to"
