Keno, makes me wonder if you didn't have a piece of meat that had something wrong with it, sounds almost like you got a touch of food born illness or something. Horrible stuff, that.
You are correct about the garden being a good thing for the mind and body. I really love getting out and digging in the dirt in the spring, watching the stuff come up, harvesting, the whole deal. I work in an office during the day, so any time I can get outside and do something I enjoy it immensely. I have about 700 square feet of garden this year, maybe more than I need but I think my family enjoys it when I bring them fresh veggies.
Anyway, hope you get over whatever the hell you have going on with that steak. That's too bad that it hit you that badly. As to the cost of meat, the quarter of beef I bought averaged out at about $3.00 per pound, which is about as cheap as store hamburger is anymore (and I got steaks, roasts, burger, all kinds of stuff). Of course, you have to have somewhere to store it, though.
