Have you ever had one? Okay, maybe I should change that to a steak hangover, I don’t really recall ever having a hang over from any other kind of meat. Yet perhaps those who eat steak regularly never can get this? But I got one right now!
I only tried being a vegetarian once in my life, back in ’84-’85 when me and my ex decide to test going that route. After about 9 months of no meat at all we broke down and started in with meat again, but for me, meat consummation would be a low intake deal at least until the last few years.
Up to 3 years ago, I would eat beef only about 2 to 3 times a year – and as far as steaks- usually only once every two years, on my visits back to NY to see my meat eating family. I still to this day haven’t eaten a meat hamburger for about 15 years now. Anyway, about 3 years ago when daughter Jackie and the boys moved back in with me, well they are meat eaters, and because I’m the main cook, and they wanted their meat, well I made it for them. So I was back to eating beef at least once a week – but not steaks, in part because we can’t afford steaks. So fast-forward to today. The kids had to move out for a few months, several weeks ago, and even before they left I was thinking about steak and even craving steak. I had let up on the beef consumtion once they were gone, but not totally. But I was dying to taste some steak.
I think it had to do with my trip back to NY last August that got me wanting steak again.. My sister made flank steak on the bar-b-que and it tasted so damn good. My grandson asked me at the dinner table why we never had any steak at home, and I told him the truth, we could not afford it. But with them gone right now, well I could afford one steak for myself, and last night, after hearing more news from my doctor which I didn’t want to hear, I went food shopping. I was feeling a bit down at that point and figured I would treat myself to something good for dinner, that being – steak! I bought the biggest sirloin they had, got home and broiled it.
Oh yes, it tasted so damn good. I never stopped eating steak because I didn’t like it, and I always believed that humans were meant to eat meat. I just know that too much of anything is bad for you, and that was why I first cut out beef. So as I was eating this steak I was thinking, humans do get off on eating different foods, no question, and steak has to be one of the great highs that most of us get from any food. So I was thinking, steak really is like a drug - it gets you high, too much of it is bad for your health, you crave it – damn, I can’t wait till I have another one, and the family isn’t due back till the end of May, so I will buy another big fat steak for sure in the next week or two!
Then this morning came. I got a damn steak hangover! I’m not joking at all here. I can still taste the steak in my mouth (and yes, I did brush), and now it don’t taste so good. The house even still stinks of it. But more important, I can feel it in my gut. Yuck! This totally sucks. I don’t get this way with ground beef, or fish, or chicken (which I have never given up), or any other food. I mean, this feels like a hangover, not like an upset stomach from overeating (I’m not saying I didn’t over eat last night, I just don’t have that feeling). Anybody else ever experience this feeling before? Again, I think my body just ain’t used to it anymore.
No, I think I will go back to my normal eating habits again, since it is a fact that too much meat is not good for you, and I done enough other band things in my life to myself as it is. So for me, no more than ground beef twice a month at the max, and no more steak at all, other than maybe once a year.
How much meat and how many steaks a year do you eat, Ronnie?
