Dead Flowers Lyrics

I really do adore this tune, and I've got an amazing live performance of it on my computer somewhere. It's country with rock and blues, and just ever so sweet but tart.

Still, wtf is a dead flower? I've read 'songfacts' about it being slang for heroin, which would make sense if taken in the context...but what do you guys/gals think Dead Flowers is really about?
