This is my Stones theory as it has evolved, not the one I had during my epiphany as a 15 year old.
The Stones are the modern manifestation of an archetype as old as western civilization. Look back at the Bacchanalia as an example of a group of people in an ecstatic frenzy which is what we are striving for at a Stones show. There are many people who have tapped into this archetype. I include Baudelaire, Rimbaud, and Lord Byron as the most obvious examples. I do not know music history very well but I am sure there are jazz musicians that have tapped into the same archetype, Charlie Parker comes to mind. The Blues movement, especially the Chicago Blues is part of this archetype.
The simplest way I can explain what an archetype is that it is a psychological phenomena of thought, action , or feelings that are shared by humanity. I focus on Western Civilization because I do not know the Eastern very well. For example we have the archetype of the Cowboy. The cowboy has come to represent an entire range of attitudes and behaviors. The Marlboro Man is the most recent image of this archetype I know of but I am sure that in country music somewhere there are more recent ones. So the archetype the Stones represents includes, rebellion, anger, ecstasy, outlawness, (not a word, sorry) and group celebration. There are others of course. The Stones sing of love and happiness, love and hurt, longing, on and on. These are all feelings that are common to all of us but are more evident in some more than others. We are part of an archetype when we take an image and try to live it. We live archetypes in the way we dress when we are trying to represent ourselves as part of a group, in the way we act when we act as part of a group (the loner is an archetype too) or when we act as part of a tradition
The archetype of the outlaw, rebellious poet is part of our civilization. The Blues and early rock and roll was based in part on the idea of the rock and roller being outside of society. Simply take a close look at Brian’s life and you will see a manifestation of the archetype. The rest of the band are part of the archetype too, the Rock Star. Mick and Keith are excellent examples of a manifestation of people desires and dreams.
In my theory Brian tapped into the archetype and Mick and Keith perfected its manifestation. But enough about archetypes. There is plenty of information out there about them. Here is a web explanation of archetypes. Wikipedia is not an authoritative source but it is generally accurate often and this case its explanation is good enough.

The second part of my theory is the Stones as a community. This board is a manifestation of that. Our love for the Stones binds us together. We share our dope and our hopes. We are a brotherhood so to speak. It does not mean we all get along because there is plenty of room in a community for all types of people. But when we are in a club late at night and we run into a fellow Stones fan and we share a joint or a snort and we feel a bond that is what I am talking about. We are brothers and sisters in the Stones so to speak. The way you all treated me during my hard winter is such a good example I need not go into further detail.
The third part is the most controversial and the one that seems to fall apart under close examination but I stand by it. Every Stones song is a perfect Stones song because the Stones created it. That does not mean that every song is perfect. It means it is a perfect Stones song. There are songs I like more than others but even the ones I do not care for are perfect. It has meaning to someone. We see that all the time here. I do not care for “Back to Zero” but there are several here that find it a good song. The point is that it is a perfect Stones song because the Stones created it, for whatever reason. It is not for us to question the Stones on the quality of the music but for us to understand it. Recently I wrote some criticisms of Keith’s playing in SAL but I wrote I am going back until I get it. That is how the theory becomes practice. When practicing this part of my theory we seek to understand what the Stones were trying to communicate through both the music and lyrics. The mood and the feeling.
Fourth and the least popular is that the best Stones is the Stones you are listening to. To me this is perfectly logical because while listening you are experiencing the song. Experience is what it is all about. Being in the now is the whole point of living and living in the now with the song you are listening to makes the song part of your immediate intimate experience. The fundamentals of this part of my theory are repetition, concentration and intent. We intend to be in the now and to experience the Stones in an immediate and intimate fashion. We repeat the song until we know it backwards and forwards and can anticipate every nuance of the song. Then we are attentive, we concentrate on the song to the exclusion of everything else. I have the Stones on as I write this but I am not really attentive. When I am practicing this part of my theory I have to pay close attention to the music with the intent of understanding and being in the now with the song. I experience the song as it plays. I am part of the song becuae I feel it so intensely.
The Stones are in my bones. I believe that simply through repetition, concentration and intent the songs sink into my unconscious. The music become part of my physical body and part of my mental make up. We know that memory, experience, sensation etc. have a biochemical component, if not in entirety. However, there is consciousness as opposed to whatever biochemical basis we have in experience. One aspect of consciousness is awareness. When aware you know what you are doing and why. Intent can shape awareness. I intend to be in the now with the Stones so my awareness while listening is enhanced.
The end result of my theory is that is provides guidelines for practice. Being a Stonesfan becomes a lifestyle that is both private and public. I share it with you all but I have my own personal relationship to the music that is mine alone. It is a search. It is a search for Stones bliss. This happens in the now. It is an intimate vital experience.
Being a Stonesfan is a path to enlightenment. It is no different than a religion except it does not have a deity. But it is still holy.It has a shared community of thought, feeling, and action.
I live “Bitch.” Enough said.
The music!
