I have to admit I forgot about Keith's fingers when I posted last night. I included that I understand they are getting older too, just as we are, but I did not take into consideration arthritis. While watching the movie a trend seemed to develop in my mind of Keith not playing a solid consistent guitar.
I think what did it, besides the lack of guitar playing was Keith changing costumes three times during his set. But I did notice he said "Thank you, Ronnie" after YGTS.
Perhaps I bordered on or crossed the line into condemnation but it hurts to see Keith standing around clowning when the guitar parts are missing.
I cannot counter any of your all comments. I think you are probably right. But the Sound is suffering and the Sound is what it is all about. I will always go to the shows even if it is just to hang around with them. I would prefer a shorter show though where Keith can maintain his abilities rather than a long show where he has to spread himself thin.
However, if this is the case then why is Ronnie turned down in the mix? If they are compensating for Keith's inability to play why do they focus on him. It is because he is a star personality I think. If I could hear Ronnie playing better I may not feel this way. I also noticed Mick playing the rhythm on Love is Strong.
Perhaps I was too harsh because of my awareness of a trend. When I go back and listen to the old days Keith did not always play fancy guitar parts but played in a manner that both guitars, his and Brian's, combined to create a whole sound. Now his playing is fragmented. There may be good reasons for this as Keno, TM, and PBU point out. My gut feeling is that Keith feels he is just as big a star as Mick, which he is, and he is taking advantage of that to distract us from noticing he is not playing the guitar as well as he used to.
I would rather hear him play a solid rhythm guitar on some of the songs rather than throwing in a lick now and then.
But I am beating a dead horse. It is the way it is and I have to accept it. I often say I sometimes disagree with the Stones but accept their decisions so I will have to on this one too.
As I drove home after the show I thought, "I am not a yes man to the Stones." I still think the movie, especially when it is tied to a soundtrack, was a mistake. I can't help but feel that way. It seems to me they are taking the easy way and riding on their stardom to rack in the big bucks.
Maybe Keith was being more honest than I thought when he said,"we are both lousy guitar players but together can outplay 10 guitars." I thought he was being facetious at the time.
I think I carry a little resentment that Brian and Mick T., who were both great guitar players, were treated the way they were and now he is not fulfilling the role that gave him the "right" to do so. It seems like he still wants to take the credit but is not dishing it out anymore.
But...I do not feel comfortable focusing on Keith's "faults."
Personally, even though I enjoyed the last tour immensely I wish they had stopped touring after the Licks tour. The reason is that their "godlike" status is slowly being replaced with human fragility. It is unfair I know. They should be able to make the hundreds of millions of dollars they make from a tour. I don't want Keith to go hungry. But I don't want him to be Johnny Carson either. I found it mildly disturbing to see him hugging Hillary Clinton's mother.
It would be against my nature to not go see them when they tour again. But if the ticket prices remain $450 I will go to just one show.
I don't expect them to sound like 72 or even like 94. I expect them to produce the Sound. If the Sound is not there then what is the point of the show? When I was unable to perform in the Navy due to my exercise induced asthma I retired. (not like I had much choice though)
I still love you Keith but it hurts to see you become a star personality rather than a godlike guitar player. If you can't play because of physical disabilities then tell us. Don't cover it up by becoming a second front man. I did not like seeing you with no guitar in hand during YGTS. I do not pay a thousand bucks for a ticket to share the good time. I pay it to hear the Sound. The Sound is bigger than the Stones. So that is my lecture: Keith...remember the Sound and don't let it suffer!
