I don't think it is that he isn't trying so much as it is that he can't play the way he used to any longer. Have you looked closely at his fingers lately? The arthritis has taken its toll on him. So it is either that he retires from playing live - and the Stones are done, or Ronnie plays most of the guitar parts now and Keef plays what he still can play. That is what we fans are left with at this point. Do we still want to see them live, in this way - or not? That's the real question for Stones fans to think about. But one thing is for sure - Keef cannot play today like he did even 10 years ago; plus, those days of his youth are long gone, so what we have now is the man in his old age. Of course, I do not mean that as a put down, only as a fact. Folks in their mid 60s are old and most of them are retired by Keef's age.
As for my own feelings, I'm overjoyed that the Stones are still around and are still an active band, even if Keef's fingers are fucked up. I still love to see them live; my only complaint is that their ticket prices are way too high - not only for the fact that we are now getting to see the older and less active playing Keef - but the fact that they don't play 30+ songs a night - as they should for the price they charge us fans. That of course is an old complaint made by many of us for the last 2 tours now. Perhaps something will change with the next tour as far as the price dropping, or the number of songs played going up - but I will not hold my breath.
