Well, I talked to TM about the soundtrack to this movie and he noticed I was not very enthusiastic. The movie helped me appreciate the soundtrack more but it also had some unfortunate side effects.
I think Ronnie is trying to fill the shoes of Brian and Mick T. but Keith is no longer trying to fill his own shoes. I noticed it for the first time in Denver during the Licks tour which I described as Keith being lazy at the time. Then in the second show in Chicago last tour I made excuses for Keith because it was so cold. But this movie showed me Keith is not trying to play the full, driving, and fluid guitar he used to. He plays licks now. he throws licks in here and there. He does not even try to create the full sound we called weaving anymore. Ronnie continues to go up I my estimation and although I still love Keith and think he is quite a personality he is not the guitar player I know and love anymore.
I may sound treasonous but I expect more from the Stones than what they did for the movie. I understand we are all getting older. I also understand that the shows are more of an entertainment event than a musical one. But we get to see the Stones smile and have fun, that is something. Mick seemed to enjoy "Loving Cup" and "Live With Me" but I did not. Where does all the screaming in LWM come from, it is not in the song. LC is one of my favorite songs but this version was ruined by Jack White.
There were some good points -- ATGB was very good. Far Away Eyes was very good, perhaps the best I have heard. Mick did not parody country music he sang it sincerely. The cinematography was good.
Brian was in three scenes for about 6 seconds total, but that was a good six seconds.
But I am not going to let my first viewing ruin my fun. I will go again tomorrow and the next nights until I get it.
I want Keith to play the fucking guitar! Okay, maybe a Stones show has turned into party. I like to party too. But I like to party to the full sound of the Stones. Where once they were fluid and full sounding they are now irregular with many holes in the sound.
I listened to the rock station here in Denver during my drive and the Stones were still a lot better than anything I heard. I tried to explain to TM that I am not being critical as in condemning but as in being a critic. I like to compare the sound of the different shows I have seen.
I first noticed the change in their sound during the Voodoo Lounge tour. I thought the separation of the sound was very good at the time because I could hear every note distinctly. Now I yearn for the fuzzy blurry sound of a stack of Ampegs at full volume. 81 comes to mind as the perfect blend of a distinct separation of sound and the full sound I am trying to describe.
So that is my initial impression. I liked it better when Keith played a bad ass guitar and stayed in the background concentrating on playing rather being up front being a personality.
