They did make the Internet so we could argue about music, so we may as well use it!
My comments weren't supposed to be another "ABB Sucks" thread. Just my opinion that another album that I find that distasteful is going to put my whole fanboy life in doubt. I'm glad you like it, but one more of those and they'll lose me, I can tell.
I find it hard to believe you find absolutely no clinkers on ABB. What about Biggest Mistake? Anyway You Look At It has a lock on biggest turd in the punchbowl, but Biggest Mistake really dives in deep and holds it's shape in comparison. There's two things that really get me about the whole album though. The first is the sound. It sounds like there's no room ambiance, and the Stones were the kings of making an album sound of a place. Exile sounds like a dirty basement. Sticky Fingers sounds like rock n' roll in a lush, rich room. Beggars Banquet sounds like it was recorded in Muscle Shoals. Some Girls sounds like NYC. ABB sounds like any pop record to come out recently. The production is so sterile, and there's never the feeling that you get when Keith hits that opening chord and you can hear the stainer on the snare drum rattle while Charlie waits to bang it out. The anticipation of decadent fun is missing.
My other big problem is the lyrics, and I'm really not a stickler for that. I really dislike the opening verse of Streets of Love. Say "awful" enough and that's apparently what sticks in my brain. There's just an amazing number of sophomoric lyrics:
Are you coloring your hair with some new kind of dye?
I won't interrogate you and I never will berate you about your lifestyle.
And the truck's coming at you, just going to splash you
It goes on. I mean, that stuff is laughably bad. I'd like to not notice, but I do. I remember when Sherat mentioned how dumb the line from Oh No Not You Again about the Moon is Yellow, I'm like Jello. I still like that line. That's funny. It's said with a wink and a nod. But so many of the verses seem so forced.
I'm glad you like it. But another one like that and I think I'll be gone. I think I'd rather see them treat the archives with the respect they deserve, and I'd rather see them be the ones that get to decide their legacy. Not some critic or other musician or whatever. I'd love to see those guys do it.
