RE: Jimmy's Review: Let it Bleed

One of the key things about LIB, is that it just might be the best SOUNDING Stones record ever - the original LP sounded great, the original CD release was even OK...but the remastered CD absolutely SMOKES. Its a really odd thing to say that, considering all the 'advances' in recording technology since then. Even the outtakes from those sessions sound better than most - definitely some Magic going on at Olympic early to mid 69..

And when you consider that it really WAS just the four of them mostly, it makes it even more special. Even Keith admits that 'the four of us were doing some pretty good things then.,,' - which from Keith is an absolute RAVE.

Gimme Shelter - Opening masterpiece. Inspired use of Merry Clayton. Keith's nasty leads AND rhythm riffs. Charlie at his best - syncopated, yet strong. Bill's brooding, nasty bass. Mick at his best -

Love in Vain - OK...Mick will never sound 'authentic', but he brings his style to the Johnson classic. Keith's blues picking was never better, and nice slide by Cooder. On the remastered version, they eliminated all the space in between tracks, which supposedly was the way the band wanted it originally. The micro second between this and CH makes for a brilliant transition.

Country Honk - Ah...the 'controversial' one. Absolutely hated by just about all when they first hear it, it simply is just another Great Stones Track. The way HTW was SUPPOSED to be originally. If you have ever heard Hank Williams, and I surely urge you to LISTEN to him someday, you realize how dead on PERFECT this track is. The bootleg, without the fiddle and car horn, maybe is even better - spare...basic....these cats can play country!

Live With Me - Stones Fun - full of ribald joy! Historic, as both Mick T's first album track AND the debut of Bobby Keys.

Let it Bleed - Such a cool track, it even features Stu very prominently! This is definitely the 'durty sox' (as per the sleeve)of the album. Keith's crusty slide, Bill with very very cool bass lines (and autoharp!), and Charlie at his barroom best.

Midnight Rambler - Its too bad this gets kind of forgotten after all various live versions floating around, cause this is one SCARY track! Norman Mailer meets The Stones in a way - never overplayed, and Miller and Johns get the echo JUST right when needed. Live, its OK to overplay and come to a bang and crash ending, but on a studio track, precision is needed more. The way the band comes out of the 'rape in anger' mid point here, is still chilling - the way Wyman THEN Watts (which is very unusual for the band- usually its the other way around)come in, then the whole band after the 'black panther' line..POW...then rumbles along hard...until Keith's guitar and Bill's overloaded bass ending in what for all the world sounds like their instruments moaning...

You Got the Silver - The song which goes, yes, Keith could actually sing at one time! No Mick at all - just Keith, and the band - even Brian! This really is better than the 'Mick version' Keith really gives his heart out in this. Fine work by everyone involved.

Monkey Man - Yes, another classic. Between Mick's uninhibited performance, a great, almost 'jazzy' feel by all the band (Bill on vibes? Amazing), almost a throw away - but they get to jibe the critics, AND toss more fuel on the rumor fires...

You Can't Always Get What You Want - Mick's production masterwork - what's not to like about this? Even though it is weird that Jimmy M is drumming, not Charlie. Keith's work on this is totally underrated - the absolute essence of rhythm guitar.

Is it obvious I LOVE this album (like everyone else)??

PLAY THIS RECORD LOUD

truer words never written....
