For those of you who have read my many rants on Let it Bleed, it is no surprise that I find this album to be the best Stones album of all time. It is so good, it won't hurt to review it again.
There are very few albums that can touch the genius of this album, and talk about a bad time. The band was looking for another guitar player, and Keith became the lone guitarist on all but two songs, although Brian and Ry Cooder contributed autoharp and mandolin respectively. This has to be Keith's best album. Gimme Shelter, apart from being the greatest rock 'n roll song ever written, is Keith's finest moment. Can you honestly think of a slinkier opening to a song? How about the dirty soloing in the middle? (and Mick's harp solo is great too) What about Charlie's syncopated drum opening? On top of that, you've got Mick singing one of his most gutsy vocals complimented by Merry Clayton's unforgettable singing. It's a masterpiece of the highest order! The rest of the album is just as brilliant. Love in Vain changes pace drastically, but it's so fluid and soulful. It only got better when they played it live with Mick Taylor's great slide playing. And speaking of Mick Taylor, he makes his first appearance (well, second if you count Honkey Tonk Women) on a Stones song with Country Honk. I never really liked this version in comparison to the electric version, and I still prefer the electric version. However, this bar-drinking country version of the classic has grown on me and I love it to death. Live with Me is funky as hell with a booming bass by Keith and the first appearance of Bobby Keys. Let it Bleed is another winner full of funny lyrics and a universal concept: We all do need someone we can bleed on.
Midnight Rambler? C'mon! Classic! The dynamics are so intense in this song, you lose track of time and just tune out. Keith is all over this song with Mick blowing away into his greatest harp performance. The breakdown always sends chills up my spine. Mick's voice is top notch on this one. Keith sings his first lead vocal on You Got the Silver which is a very nice song with Nicky Hopkins' keyboards floating around. Monkey Man is pure brilliance with Mick taking on the persona of... A MONKEY!!! Bill's bass is tops on this song. There are few albums that open as well as this does, but there are even fewer that close the way this one does: You Can't Always Get What You Want! Well, I don't know about you guys, but I get everything I want with this song. It's epic! Keith's guitar is so fluid and Mick sings with so much passion, you visualize everything he says in your mind. It's so hard to describe this song, because it's just one long journey.
What can I say, this album is God!
