Red Mountain Pass, elevation 11,018 ft (3,358 m), is a mountain pass in the San Juan Mountains of western Colorado. It is traversed by the Million Dollar Highway (aka U.S. Highway 550) between Ouray and Silverton. The pass is known for being treacherous in the wintertime due to the steep 8% grade and switchbacks, many sections of road is winding, narrow and has no shoulder/guardrails, with dropoffs exceeding 1,000 feet in places. Many people have been killed on this road throughout the years. Avalanches are frequent, and block the highway from time to time. Unofficially, 500 inches of snow falls on the pass each year.
